first program, 16 years ago Do you see the 25 stars? In shape of diamond, this is my first program which I did about 16 years ago. That was in my middle school, 1991, thanks god, we have PC there and of course we were asked by the computer teacher to put our shoes in plastic bags and watching steps very carefully. We opened the book, typing the codes from the book, "basic" which is, and saw the output... We didn't know anything about "if, for, while", just couldn't help to be so much curious and saw the stars on the screen, like a magic... And I was came from the country, sitting with a classmate, who's obvious stronger than me and came from the city, insisted he used first, and since he sitting in front of the PC, I didn't get a chance to type.. I have never ever dreamed that I'm now working for Microsoft, with those crazy guys, I don't even know what Microsoft is at 1991, probably knew apple better than Microsoft, because of the legend of bitten apple. I installed visual studio 2005, and code my first trial program today, which is not going to be "hello world', is the star, which brought me so much magic and which I didn't got the chance to draw by myself 16 years ago... Oh yeah... here I 'm . ![]() tags: programming hobby @ 20070718 07:10:00 with 0 comments read more... |
there are spams, yet, emails could be very powerful What a fool I'm seems I have sent & replied several emails with no good impacts recently. The good thing is, I got the feedback and learning to be more careful on treating them: 1. Double check the spelling of address if it's first time you sending mail out. (it's simple to do and there are so many similar alias within one large organization. ) 2. Consider if this is really worth sending if you are in a mood, try to response or send in another day. 3. Check if it's really necessary to loop somebody in. 4. Think before click "reply" and "reply to all". 5. Check if attachments have been properly attached before send. These steps are all worth doing because they are hundred times of good than recall after events. tags: career life career advice @ 20070717 06:41:00 with 0 comments read more... |
Career advice - from executive speech (2) Look a big picture Always look at the big picture. If the product you are working on, think about every scenario, situation that when I call the work with IE 4 or IE 7, whatever it was, just think about what are the customer respective , what are the customers going to say. Think too much about title & pay And this one is, a little interesting to talk about in China. I totally realized that especially titles mean a lot in China. This is really from my own experience, when I don’t worry what my title is, they are a lead or a manager or whatever, the right things just happen. Because what really happens is that, “how I going to get a senior dev lead “ instead of focusing that, I actually focus on how can I get my work done. So, really it’s a focus issue. The more you just focus on doing the right job, having the right passion, that’s what in the case weather you going to make ready for the next title, promotion. To me, the very key thing to be successful, when I first came to Microsoft, I’ve gone through so many different titles, jobs, I’ve gone from been a manager to a lead, to have 100, 5, 150 people reporting to me, to me actually it doesn’t matter, to me, what matters is what is the impact that I can have on the company on the customer, on the products. Training Training is very important to people and I totally get that, I know that a lot times, when I speak to the people in university, one of the most frequently asked question is , what’s the training like in Microsoft, and I have been in Motorola worked for another company and, to me that : there are 2 different approaches: One of the approaches I guess ... tags: career life career advice @ 20070716 06:56:00 with 0 comments read more... |
A snap of "Casual" with MS Last week, in HR global all hands video meeting, the senior VP was gaving presenation in pants. As symbol of high technology culture, in almost the 30 years, now we got companies like "Google" & other new cutting edge web 2.0 companies, Microsoft is keeping his great tradition and on reformancing. tags: working in MS MS culture @ 20070713 06:06:00 with 0 comments read more... |
Career advice - from executive speech (1) I just finished the NEO training and yesterday, general manager of WLC (Windows Live China) gave the speech which is interesting and meaningful, meanwhile. Some brief info: Loves cars (got collections of ford 1935) & water skiing (it’s real, showed us the pictures). Previously from Motorola, and joined Microsoft with a plan to stay maybe five years, then found himself can not leave Microsoft. He’s been with Microsoft for 16 years when we got only about 4,000 employees and still in era of windows 3.0. Before moving on, just want to update, this article is not originally sent by him, I just do a fast recording and after that recalled from my memory, so, not ensure the accuracy of 100%. Usually I’m not a fast thinker, I’m used to think while talking, that means I’m not a fast talker either. What I’m used to do is, on speech or training, I don’t ask frequently, instead, I try to recall & think over again about the contents, not long time after, maybe one or two days, and I found which is very helpful to learn more. The article will be separated in several, just try to attract you for browsing & visiting a lot :-P Career advice (practical things) Working hard (Laughing) When I think about working hard, I actually really don’t mean you should work 20 hours a day. When you at work, make sure you work hard, and also think about work really efficiently. You are finding everyday you spending one hour doing some task, and think about why you doing that task everyday and could you automate that task and that will spend 5 minutes a day, and could spend the other 55 minutes doing something else. Work hard when you are here bu ... tags: career life career advice @ 20070712 07:16:00 with 0 comments read more... |
