20 mins, 10 km.

I was on rolling around 9PM tonight, cross around a dozen blocks, in 20 mins, around 10 km.
This is first could be called excise since join Microsoft, am I too busy, or because it's always too hot? or too much rain?
Nah, all execuses.

I didn't roller that fast today, but it's really fun, cross the lanes, watching people sitting under the trees, eating water melons and watching soccers...don't have to think too much about work, a good way to relax...

When I back, seems like I lost 1L sweets..

I attached a pic which took on 20040718 17:56, 36 months ago, looks quite different from at office :-P

Career advice - from executive speech (the end)

Learn from past experience

Don’t’ be afraid to make mistakes , for many people, we tend to get, what if we fail, what if we are making a mistake and not doing the right thing, and that’s actually not good, because sometimes the best way to know whether something is going to work is to actually try and go back and say why it didn’t work, maybe just one little part of that will go wrong thing and changing that.

Don’t worry about fail, if you making the same mistake 3 times then worried (laugh).

Making a mistake once is really nothing to worry about.

I wouldn’t allow somebody to if I’m a manager ,hey you know, I just feel like we writing messenger core platform, just because I think I can make that nicer and find out that 3 weeks messenger doesn’t work and hundreds of millions of users. I probably wouldn’t allow that somebody to make that kinds of mistakes.

But most the time, when we do something, if we don’t try, we wont ever know.

Innovation

When talk about innovation, I actually for my team, I have set up a commitment, and one of the commitment is about innovation, it’s not just about product innovation, I’d like to have people think about some new innovation on the products, on the features, some great idea, somebody helps the team to win.

But also it can be in the area of process, what about test driven development, what about a different process, the way I test the code, the way I do the usability study, whatever I did, just always be thinking about new ways of trying things. Or e ...

balance life & work

I was about to watch the "transformer" with friend, and as usual, checked mailbox after supper, found and interview set on 8:30PM.
It's always hard to balance between life & work.

Tomorrow night you are not going to see my "green face" on communicator or MSN, 'cause my gf's birthday.

What does that mean, if I didn't get notification from Microsoft?

You are interviewed, no matter it is phone interview or by face, and you didn't get notification after that.
What does that mean?

Normally,Microsoft's interview for technical job, the response circle won't take more than 5 working days, i.e. 1 week.
So far I have not seem a response longer than 1 week.

when this happens, mean 3 things:

1. It's an end of your waiting period, for this position, at this time. What we do is, we do will recommend some interviewed candidates to other product groups, if we think unfortunately do not have appropiate positions for you for this product group. Always hire for Microsoft first.

2. It means Microsoft is not lucky enough to have you in. I mean this seriously. Please do not take the interview as a benchmark. Every been interviewed, no matter is a phone or face interview, they already have the strong skill sets. For example, I have met some genious guys, they could optimize data warehouse in amazing smooth way, they are from some internet service providing company and are the key players. It's more important for you to find yourself than joining certain company.

3. You could certainly apply again. The previous interview feedback has no impact to your next interview, people & Microsoft both growing, we do have some people joining after second or third times applicatoin. We thank for your great interests towards us.

first program, 16 years ago

Do you see the 25 stars? In shape of diamond, this is my first program which I did about 16 years ago.

That was in my middle school, 1991, thanks god, we have PC there and of course we were asked by the computer teacher to put our shoes in plastic bags and watching steps very carefully.

We opened the book, typing the codes from the book, "basic" which is, and saw the output...

We didn't know anything about "if, for, while", just couldn't help to be so much curious and saw the stars on the screen, like a magic...

And I was came from the country, sitting with a classmate, who's obvious stronger than me and came from the city, insisted he used first, and since he sitting in front of the PC, I didn't get a chance to type..

I have never ever dreamed that I'm now working for Microsoft, with those crazy guys, I don't even know what Microsoft is at 1991, probably knew apple better than Microsoft, because of the legend of bitten apple.

I installed visual studio 2005, and code my first trial program today, which is not going to be "hello world', is the star, which brought me so much magic and which I didn't got the chance to draw by myself 16 years ago...

Oh yeah... here I 'm .

there are spams, yet, emails could be very powerful

What a fool I'm seems I have sent & replied several emails with no good impacts recently.
The good thing is, I got the feedback and learning to be more careful on treating them:

1. Double check the spelling of address if it's first time you sending mail out. (it's simple to do and there are so many similar alias within one large organization. )
2. Consider if this is really worth sending if you are in a mood, try to response or send in another day.
3. Check if it's really necessary to loop somebody in.
4. Think before click "reply" and "reply to all".
5. Check if attachments have been properly attached before send.

These steps are all worth doing because they are hundred times of good than recall after events.
